Game Changers are delighted to announce another new partnership as we launch a serious of challenges on behalf of the Advanced Fuel Cycle Programme (AFCP). Part of the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy's £505m Energy Innovation Programme, AFCP is delivering a suite of fuel cycle science themes covering Advanced Nuclear Fuels through to Advanced Recycling and Sustainability. It is from these three themes that the Game Changers challenges are being launched.

More information on each of the challenges can be found below and on the Game Changers website. Online workshops will be held during the first week of March, providing further technical information and an opportunity to meet challenge owners.

Shape sorting of coated particle fuel

Coated particle fuels are a potential advanced fuel technology consisting of a fuel kernel encapsulated within multiple layers of ceramic.

Through AFCP, NNL are now seeking a novel solution to separate misshapen kernel and coated fuel particles from those that are perfectly spherical as part of a quality assurance process.

Controlling oxygen and moisture levels in salts

Through AFCP, NNL is developing a technology for the recycling and refining of nuclear fuels based on pyrochemical processing.  It is imperative that moisture content and oxygen levels remain low during pyrochemical processing.  NNL are now seeking to implement a novel, or pre-existing, method to control levels of oxygen and water during pyrochemical processing.

Treatment of nitrogen oxides from nuclear fuel recycling off-gases

NNL are seeking an alternative to wet scrubbing for the abatement of nitrogen oxides. Scrubbing performance on the UK's most recent recycling plant meets regulatory requirements, but improvements are desired for advanced fuel recycling.
